There are different options available in the market today when it comes to water heaters. Topping the list is the tankless water heater, which heats water on demand. Many advantages come with this type of heater such as a limited need for space, ability to heat water on demand, and also because it lasts longer than other types of water heaters. However, despite the advantages, this water heater also has its fair share of problems. Here are the most common ones and how you can rectify them.

Mineral and salt deposits

This is the most common problem. As water is heated, salts form and deposit inside the heating system, therefore, reducing its efficiency. The harder the water, the more the calcium and magnesium salts deposits will form. A way to eliminate this problem is to flush the system with vinegar or to use a water softener.  If you are unable to flash the unit yourself, then it would be best to call in a qualified plumber.

Boiling water

One reason for this could be loose temperature sensors; always ensure that these are properly mounted to ensure proper functioning. Another reason could be the blockage of the water inlet that leads to less water coming in. This can also be caused by dirt or by faucet aerators that have a blockage. Identify the cause and eliminate it by cleaning or by removing the obstruction.

Water not heating up well

When this happens, ensure that the temperature regulator isn’t set too low, if it is, then adjust it to the right temperature. Low pressure in the water also impairs the heating process; if you note that it is low then increase it. Another reason could be that the gas pressure is low, ensure that the gas piping system and the gas pressure is adequate for the kind of tankless water heater you are using. Last but not least, it could be that hot and cold water combines in the tank, and if it is, you should eliminate the crossover point.

Ignition problem when the hot water tap is open

This is a common problem and its causes are many, and it may require you to go through them one by one. One reason could be how the tankless hot water system is installed. If it is connected to a gas heater, then make sure the gas pressure is right.  You should also check the gas valve and ensure that it opens properly. If the heater uses electricity, check for any electrical shorts, problems with wiring or with the igniter and if you note something wrong, it should either be fixed or replaced.

Many other problems can arise, but they can be prevented by ensuring that the burner is kept clean, the venting systems are kept clear, and descaling is done regularly. It is also advisable that if you are unable to fix the problem, then call in a professional to help you out.
